Sunrisers Hyderabad has been one of the most under-rated organisations in the IPL. During the first five seasons the franchise participated as Deccan Chargers like they were introduced as in the opening season of the Indian Premier League. However, after 2012, the Hyderabad-based franchise was resolved and it was rebranded under the new ownership as Sunrisers Hyderabad.
The Surisers have had their share of ups and downs since the 2008 opening season in the biggest T20 carnival on the planet. Having won the IPL titles on two different occasions (once as Deccan Chargers) they have qualified for the playoffs six times, including finishing as the runners-up once. Today, in this article, we will find out about Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) All Captains List From 2008 To 2024 who they have had previously and how they fared.
Players Who Have Captained Deccan Chargers –
VVS Laxman: (2008)
VVS Laxman was signed by Deccan Chargers as the icon player in IPL 2008. The wristy-Indian batter was also appointed as the captain of the team. Despite having a star-studded squad at their disposal, the team endured a difficult start under his captaincy.
Having won only one game of the first six games and failing to make any contributions with the bat, VVS Laxman was sacked as the Captain by the management early in the season. Also Read: Punjab Kings (PBKS) All Captains List From 2008 To 2024 (Present)
Adam Gilchrist: (2008-2010)
Following Laxman’s sacking as a captain, Adam Gilchrist was handed over the team’s captaincy from the seventh match of the season. The legendary Aussie wicket keeper couldn’t do much as well with the Chargers managing to win only 1 game of the 8 under Gilly’s guidance and finished at the bottom of the table in the inaugural season.
However, the team surprised everyone by winning the IPL the following season in 2009 under the leadership of Gilly. Deccan Chargers maintained their form as they reached the semifinals in the next season, 2010. However, they couldn’t defend the title after losing in the semifinal. They opted to release Adam Gilchrist before the next season; consequently, the Australian departed after leading the team in 42 IPL matches.
Kumar Sangakkara: (2011-2012)
The outgoing Adam Gilchrist was replaced by another legendary wicket keeper in the form of Kumar Sangakkara. ‘Sanga’ led the Chargers for the next two IPL seasons (2011, 2012). The team fell massively in 2011, finishing 7th in the points table having won only six league games out of 14.
The Deccan Chargers’ situation didn’t improve much in the next season as their stock sank deeper, winning only four games out of 15. Finishing eighth at the table in IPL 2012, Kumar Sangakkara had a tough run with the franchise losing 17 matches out of 25 under his captaincy. As a consequence of consecutive seasons without no success, Deccan Chargers was disbanded ahead of the IPL 2013.
Cameron White: (2011-2012)
Cameron White was appointed as the Vice-Captain to Kumara Sangakkara and got the opportunity to lead the franchise on four occasions in the absence of the left-handed southpaw across the two seasons. White led the team in four games, having won two and lost two. Also Read: Rajasthan Royals (RR) All Captains List From 2008 To 2024 (Present)

Kumar Sangakkara: (2013)

Cameron White: (2013)
Cameron White was once again appointed as the Vice-Captain to Kumara Sangakkara and got the opportunity to lead the franchise 8 times winning 5 of them.
Sunrisers Hyderabad managed to qualify for the playoffs by finishing 4th in the points table. However, they couldn’t progress further as they were eliminated from the tournament after losing the Eliminator.
Shikhar Dhawan: (2014)
Shikhar Dhawan was named as the Sunrisers’ captain in the 2014 season. But performance went downhill under the Indian opener’s captaincy as the team finished 6th in the points table. Having led the team for 16 matches, Hyderabad won 7 games and lost 9. Also Read: Delhi Capitals (DC) All Captains List From 2008 To 2024
Darren Sammy: (2014)
Darren Sammy, the World Cup-winning West Indian Captain was assigned as Sunrisers Hyderabad’s deputy for the 2014 season. After the team axed Shikhar Dhawan as the captain, he captained the team mid-season across 4 games, winning two and losing two.
David Warner: (2015-2017, 2020-2021)
SRH bought David Warner in the IPL 2015 auctions and appointed him as the new captain. Under his leadership, the franchise reached unprecedented success. In 2015, they failed to qualify for the playoffs having finished 6th in the points table. The following season in the IPL 2016 Sunrisers bounced back in style as they became the champions after defeating RCB in the final.
Sunrisers continued with their good momentum by qualifying for the playoffs again in 2017. However, the Australian opener was banned due to a ball-tampering case in 2018. He returned to the franchise in 2019 but regained the captaincy in 2020.
The Orange Army qualified for the playoffs again in 2020, under David Warner. However, the team had a dreadful start in the IPL 2021, winning only one game out of the first seven. As a result, the Australian was removed from the captaincy mid-season.
Kane Williamson: (2018-2019, 2021-2022)
Sunrisers Hyderabad assigned Kane Williamson with the duty of captaincy after David Warner was banned in 2018. The Kiwi led the team in the IPL 2018 and in the IPL 2019. Kane’s time at the helm of Sunrisers was a successful one as he took the team to the finals of the 2018 season even though they lost. The following season they qualified for the playoffs or the fourth consecutive season in 2019.
In the meantime, once again he was named the captain during the dubious 2021 season, where Hyderabad’s management dismissed David Warner as the captain halfway into the season. Kane Williamson captained the Sunrisers Hyderabad in IPL 2022 as well where they finished eighth with six wins in 14 matches. Bhuvneshwar Kumar: (2019-2023)
In 2019, Bhuvaneshwar Kumar captained the Orange Army for the first time in the absence of Kane Williamson. Once again he was assigned to lead the team in the final league game of the IPL 2022. In the IPL 2023 he led the team in their opening match against the Rajasthan Royals on April 2nd, 2023 due to Aiden Markram’s unavailability. The Indian pacer has captained the franchise in 8 matches and won only two games.
Manish Pandey: (2021)
Both captain Kane Williamson and vice-captain Bhuvneshwar Kumar were unavailable during the IPL 2021 for a game against Mumbai Indians. So, the team management names Manish Pandey as the captain of the side which they lost.
Aiden Markram: (2023)
Markram was chosen as captain due to his recent leadership experience, having led the Sunrisers Eastern Cape to victory in the inaugural SA20 league. However, his time as captain was not a successful one, unfortunately. Ultimately, SRH finished the season at the bottom of the points table with only 4 wins in 14 matches. This dismal performance led to Markram being replaced by Pat Cummins as captain for the 2024 season.
Pat Cummins: (2024)
World Cup winning captain of the recently concluded World up in India, Pat Cummins has earned himself admirers for his captaincy skills and tactical acumens. Hyderabad also had to pay a hefty price of 20.50 Crore in the auction to acquire his services. Also Read: Chennai Super Kings (CSK) All Captains List From 2008 To 2024
