Mumbai Indians (MI) All Captains List from 2008 to 2024

Mumbai Indians (MI) are one of the most successful teams in the IPL alongside Chennai Super Kings (CSK) with five IPL trophies to their name and two Champions League 20 (now defunct) as well. But their success wasn’t so rapid, it was slow and gradual but e­ventually outperforming others. Today, in this article, we will find out about Mumbai Indians (MI) All Captains List from 2008 to 2024 who have had previously and how they fared until ‘Rohit Sharma – The Hitman’ took over and brought results, especially trophies. 

The­y won IPL five times in 15 se­asons. This achievement puts the­m at the top jointly with Chennai Super Kings (CSK) led by MS Dhoni. Their consistency is mind-boggling, as they’ve won five out of the­ six final games they’ve playe­d in.

Sachin Tendulkar- (2008 – 2011)

Sachin Tendulkar, often referred to as the ‘God of Cricket’ in India, has led the Mumbai Indians from 2008 to 2011. He was the first captains among list of all Mumbai Indians (MI) Captains. He could not captain the Mumbai Paltans at the beginning of the season due to injury and despite his best efforts the team could not achieve much success as they did not win a single championship either during his tenure. Mumbai finished in the 5th, 7th and 3rd in respective years under his captaincy with a Win percentage of 58.18% as he won 32 matches out of 55 losing 23 in the process. Harbhajan Singh- (2008 – 2012)

Harbhajan Singh, aka ‘Turbanator’ captained Mumbai when Sachin Tendulkar was absent at the beginning of the 2008 season due to injury. He was suspended after a fight with S Sreesanth, the pace bowler following a game against Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings). Although he did again take up captaincy after Sachin resigned after the end of the 2012 season, Mumbai Indians had an underwhelming season, finishing in fourth place at the table and reaching the  playoffs. Harbhajan Singh had the worst winning percentage of 46.66% among all the Mumbai Indians captains with 14 matches won out of 30 and losing 14, with 2 matches producing no results. 

Shaun Pollock- (2008)

The incident involving Harbhajan Singh and S Sreesanth led to Harbhajan getting suspended as a captain. The altercation had happened in a league game against Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings). Left with no choice, Mumbai Indians appointed Shaun Pollock, former cricketer, renowned for his all-rounder skills in both bowling and batting, as the captain for the rest of the season. Shaun did a pretty good job captaining the team, leading them to four matches and winning three of them while losing just one and had a winning percentage of 75%. Dwayne Bravo- (2010)

Dwayne Bravo, The ‘Champion’ and the white ball specialist was with Mumbai for three seasons- 2008, 2009 & 2010. In IPL 2010, when Sachin was absent, he captained MI for a match and became the first West Indian to do so but unfortunately they lost. The following year Dwayne Bravo moved to Mumbai Indians’ closest rivals, Chennai Super Kings. 

Ricky Ponting- (2013)

Ricky Ponting, the legendary Australian batsman and one of the most successful captains in International cricket for Australia could not replicate the same success with Mumbai Indians. So, Ponting himself chose to make way for Rohit to be made the captain after having a string of bad games with the bat. Ponting captained the initial six matches of Mumbai Indians and won three out of them. And it was his suggestion of making Rohit the captain what made the franchise click and create history. Rohit Sharma- (2013-2023)

The current Indian captain took over a Mumbai side that had all the talent of the world but could not really do it as a team. He then went on to create history by becoming one of the most successful captains of IPL. Mumbai Indians under the captaincy of Rohit became more consistent and played five finals within eight years including back-to-back titles in 2019 & 2020. IPL 2023 marked the last year of his captaincy as Mumbai replaced him with Hardik Pandya as the captain. Rohit Sharma has captained Mumbai Indians for ten years and 163 matches with a win percentage of 55.82%. In the process they won 91, winning 5 finals among the 6 finals they’ve played in. 

Kieron Pollard- (2020)

Kieron Pollard, the west Indian veteran has been with the Mumbai Indians franchise for a long time. He’s the foreign player with most matches in Mumbai Indians after Rohit Sharma and got the chance to lead the team in IPL 2020 in the absence of Rohit Sharma. Suryakumar Yadav- (2023)

SuryaKumar Yadav led the team in the IPL 2023 for one match due to Rohit being unavailable and Mumbai Indians won the match comfortably. 

Hardik Pandya- (2024) 

The decision to make Hardik Pandya the captain of Mumbai Indians replacing Rohit Sharma didn’t go down well with the Mumbai supporters as he was traded from Gujarat Titans (GT) after two stellar years as a captain for the franchise where he led the team to the Championship in his first year in charge. The following year, if not for Jadeja’s last two balls heroics in the final, he would have delivered another trophy as well to the Titans. ‘Kung-fu’ Pandya had a win percentage of 70.96% as a Captain for GT winning 22 matches out of 31. Let us hope he can continue his success as a Mumbai Indians captain and as a player as well.
